Mini Split Won't Turn On? Troubleshooting Checklist Before You Call

A mini split that won't turn on at all is frustrating, but the cause isn't always serious. Before you call for service, run through this checklist — a few of these you can solve yourself in minutes.

1. Check the Remote Batteries

It sounds obvious, but a surprising number of 'dead' mini splits just have a dead remote. Swap in fresh batteries and try again. Also make sure you're pointing it at the indoor unit and that nothing is blocking the signal.

2. Check the Breaker and Disconnect

Look at your electrical panel for a tripped breaker and reset it if needed. Many mini splits also have an outdoor disconnect box near the condenser — make sure it's switched on. If the breaker trips again immediately, stop and call a professional; that's a sign of an electrical fault.

3. Power Cycle the System

Turn the unit off, shut off its breaker for three to five minutes, then restore power. This resets the control board and clears many transient glitches that leave a unit unresponsive.

4. Check for Error Codes

If the indoor unit's lights are blinking, it's reporting a fault rather than being truly dead. Note the pattern — it points to what's wrong, from a sensor to a communication problem.

5. Rule Out a Blown Fuse

Some systems have fuses on the control board or in the disconnect. A blown fuse cuts power to the unit. Checking and replacing these safely is best done by a technician.

When It's Time to Call

If the breaker is on, the remote works, and a power cycle doesn't help — or if the breaker keeps tripping — the problem is internal: a failed control board, a bad capacitor, a communication fault, or a compressor issue. These need professional diagnosis. Don't keep resetting a breaker that won't hold, as that can indicate a serious fault.
