Mini Split Error Codes Explained: What Those Blinking Lights Mean
By the Mini Split Repair NJ team · Updated October 2026

When your mini split starts blinking lights or flashing a code on its display, it's trying to tell you something. Each brand uses its own system, but the logic is similar. Here's how to read what your unit is reporting — and why the code is only the starting point.
What Error Codes Actually Tell You
An error code points to a subsystem that's reporting a problem — a sensor, the communication link, the compressor, or a pressure issue. What it usually doesn't tell you is the root cause. A code that says 'sensor fault' could mean a bad sensor, bad wiring to the sensor, or a board that can't read it. That's why codes are a clue, not a diagnosis.
Common Categories of Codes
- Communication errors — the indoor and outdoor units can't talk to each other (wiring, corrosion, or board fault).
- Sensor/thermistor faults — a temperature sensor is reading out of range.
- Pressure faults — high or low refrigerant pressure, often tied to charge or airflow.
- Compressor/inverter faults — the compressor or its drive board has a problem.
- Fan motor faults — the indoor or outdoor fan isn't running correctly.

Brand Differences
Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, Gree, and others each have their own code libraries. Some flash the operation and timer lights in patterns; others show an alphanumeric code on a display or remote. Your owner's manual lists your model's codes, but interpreting them correctly still takes experience.
What You Can Try First
Before calling anyone, try a full power cycle: turn the unit off, shut off its breaker for a few minutes, then restore power. This clears transient faults. Also check and clean the filters, since airflow problems trigger several codes. If the code returns, it's a real fault.
When to Call a Technician
If a power cycle and filter cleaning don't clear the code, you need a professional. Communication, compressor, and pressure faults in particular require meters and gauges to diagnose safely. Don't keep running a unit that's throwing a persistent code — you risk turning a small repair into a big one.
