Why Is My Mini Split Not Cooling? 7 Common Causes (and Fixes)

By the Mini Split Repair NJ team · Updated October 2026

Technician diagnosing a mini split that is not cooling

Few things are more frustrating than a mini split that's clearly running — fan spinning, lights on — but blowing air that just isn't cold. Before you sweat through another New Jersey summer afternoon, here are the seven most common reasons a ductless system stops cooling, and what each one takes to fix.

1. Low Refrigerant From a Leak

This is the number-one cause. Your mini split is a sealed system, so it should never run low on refrigerant unless there's a leak. When the charge drops, the system loses its ability to absorb heat and the air stops getting cold. The fix isn't just topping it off — a good technician finds and repairs the leak first, then recharges to the exact specification. Simply adding refrigerant without fixing the leak means you'll be back to warm air within weeks.

2. Dirty Evaporator or Condenser Coils

Coils caked in dust and grime physically can't transfer heat. The evaporator coil (indoor) absorbs heat from your room; the condenser coil (outdoor) dumps it outside. When either is filthy, cooling collapses. This is extremely common and often fixed with a thorough professional cleaning rather than any parts replacement.

3. A Frozen Coil

Ironically, ice on the indoor coil stops cooling entirely. It's usually caused by restricted airflow (dirty filter or coil) or low refrigerant. The ice blocks air from passing through, so no cold air reaches the room. Turn the unit off to let it thaw, then call a technician to find why it froze.

4. A Failing Compressor

The compressor is the heart of the system — it pressurizes the refrigerant that makes cooling possible. A weak or failing compressor can't do its job, so cooling drops or stops. This is a more serious repair, and on older units it sometimes tips the scales toward replacement.

5. A Stuck Reversing Valve

Because a mini split both heats and cools, it has a reversing valve that switches between modes. If that valve sticks, the unit might blow warm air even when set to cool. It takes a technician to diagnose and free or replace the valve.

6. Clogged or Dirty Air Filters

The easiest one to rule out yourself. Filters choked with dust restrict airflow so much that the unit can't cool effectively and may even freeze. Pop out the washable filters, rinse them, let them dry fully, and reinstall. Do this every few weeks during heavy use.

7. Control Board or Sensor Faults

Mini splits rely on temperature sensors (thermistors) and a control board to run correctly. A bad sensor can misread the room temperature and run the system wrong; a failing board can misfire entirely. These need electrical diagnosis to confirm.

When to Call a Professional

You can safely check and clean the filters yourself. Everything else on this list — refrigerant, coils, compressor, reversing valve, electronics — requires gauges, meters, and training to diagnose correctly. If a filter rinse doesn't restore cooling within a few hours, it's time to call a specialist before a small issue becomes a big one.
